About UsThe Mustang Public Schools Foundation, Inc.’s (the “Foundation”) purpose is to support and enhance the educational experience of the students by helping Mustang Public School’s faculty and staff by performing the following activities:
- Awarding Teacher Classroom Grants that have a direct impact on the educational experience of the students served. These grants typically are to fund learning projects that are above and beyond the normal curriculum provided to the teachers and students by the District. The grants are focused on the subjects of Reading, Math and Science education but are not limited to those subjects.
- Awarding School Site Grants that have an enhancing educational impact on the student population of the particular school receiving the Site Grant. These grants tend to be larger in scope and purpose where the general benefit is for the student population as a whole.
- Awarding a Mustang Memorial Scholarship to students of the Mustang Public School District to assist them in furthering their education at a college or university of their choice.
Since its inception in 2005, the Foundation, has awarded in excess of $100,000 in grants and scholarships.
The Foundation is very efficient with donor contributions. Since 2005, 98% of all expenditures of the Foundation were spent providing program services of grants and scholarships, while only 2% of expenditures were spent on administrative costs. This means that for every $100 received from donations, $98 land in the classroom or fund a student scholarship. When comparing the Mustang Public Schools Foundation’s efficiency with other 501( c )(3) organizations, others typically only spend 50% to 75% on program services.
The Foundation is committed to its mission of supporting, promoting, and enhancing academic excellence within Mustang Public Schools.
Current Board Members
Steve Wilson - President
Steve Wilson and his wife, Karen, moved to Mustang in 1984. Both of their daughters graduated from Mustang Public Schools. Steve has served on the Mustang City Council for several years. Prior to retirement, he was a local business owner for 24 years. Steve was one of the founding members of the Mustang Public Schools Foundation after realizing a need for support and an avenue for raising money for the classroom teacher's creative projects. Steve's passion is the children and their success in the classroom.
Steven Phelan, CPA.CITP - Treasurer
Steven M. Phelan, CPA.CITP manages an accounting practice based in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Areas of practice include taxation, accounting, business advisory and technology consulting services. He is both a Certified Public Accountant and Certified Information Technology Professional and received his Bachelor of Accountacy degree from the University of Oklahoma. He also holds several vendor specific software certifications. Steven is a discussion leader for K2 Enterprises where he speaks to CPAs throughout the nation covering a variety of computer software and technology related topics. Steven has also written a number of technology related articles for state and national publications. Steven is a member of the Oklahoma Society of CPAs and the American Institute of CPAs. Steven is active in the Mustang Oklahoma community and is currently serving as Treasurer for the Mustang Public Schools Foundation. Previously, Steven served as Treasurer for the Friends of the Mustang Public Library, Inc.
Jeffery E Johnson - Director & Secretary
Jeff Johnson has been a part of the Mustang community since 1982. Jeff is married to Sandra and they have two daughters who both attended Mustang Public Schools from kindergarten through 12th grade. Jessica is a Speech Language Pathologist and Kathryn is a music teacher with Moore Public Schools. Jeff graduated with a Bachelor's in Adult Education in 2012 and a Master's of Education in Educational Leadership from The University of Central Oklahoma in 2016. Jeff is a former Mustang School Board Member serving from 1997 to 2013. Jeff is a Career Technology Educator with the Francis Tuttle Technology Center since 2004.
Russ Myers – Director
Russ Myers and his family are long-time residents of Mustang with his parents, sons and himself all graduating from Mustang High School. Russ was an owner in a local business for 25 years before retirement. He has traveled extensively covering all 50 states and 5 continents. Russ has held many leadership positions in his church and is an avid golfer.
Rhonda Hurst – Director
Rhonda Hurst is a 1982 graduate of Mustang High School. She has been married for 34 years to Trent Hurst, a 1981 graduate of Mustang Public Schools. They have two sons who are teachers and coaches in the Mustang system. Rhonda has worked 25 years for the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation. She is the Executive Assistant to the Director and the Coordinator for the Wildlife Expo, the largest outdoor recreational event in the State of Oklahoma.
Sandra Johnson – School District Liaison
Sandi and her husband, Jeff, have been involved in Mustang Public Schools for the past 30 years in one form or another. She is now an employee of the school district, serving as Secretary to the Assistant Superintendent. With a background and education in business and finance plus eight years with the Francis Tuttle Foundation, Inc., Sandi hopes to assist the Mustang Public Schools Foundation as District Liaison to achieve their goals to help students and teachers.
